pastry chef superior, head chef doesn't come close. Went to restaurant for Saturday evening dinner bringing guests. I'd been there before a year earlier and the food was great. This time it was a serious disappointment. The head chef refused to accommodate the customer on a very minor point-- he allowed one to change the seafood pasta from spaghetti to linguini, but dispite having linguini for the special, he wouldn't allow the other two to make the substitution. Quite bizarre. Overall the food was mediocre this time. But the pastry chef was superb. A new chef must have been hired who was not up to par.
The HTP's finest. Al Med is the best restaurant in the HTP (Hummelstown, PA). No offense to Bill's, Jo-Jo's, Hoss's, the 'wick, or the late great Dempsey's American Kitchen. I went recently for the first time in a few years and realized that they've still got the magic touch that once attracted such notable celebrities as John Travolta and the author of this review. The beef carpaccio salad was out of this world. The tomato sauce was fresh, and seasonal dishes like the pumpkin ravioli with Italian sausage h!t the spot like Chick's Tavern after a long work week. The cheese selection is also outstanding, for all you cheese hogs out there. "Al-Mediterraneo" is Italian for "To the Mediterranean," and this place pretty much transports you to the Mediterranean without having to leave the friendly confines of the good ol' HTP.
Hit and Miss. I frequent Al Med about 3 times a month. I have had some truly great meals, and some others which I would prefer to forget. On busy nights service can be pretty bad...food presented cold and up to a 30 min. wait for apps/soups/salads. When all is running well, food is delicious, perfectly done. Fish is always great if you stick to the staples: tuna, salmon, or their seafood stew. I usually don't get red meat, but from what I tried it was good. The wine selection is varied price wise, which I like.
